Thailand's End-of-life Expenditure

This study investigates end-of-life healthcare costs for the Thai population using national insurance claims and mortality registry data. It analyzes 1.4 million decedents from 2020–2022 and maps spending trajectories over the last 24 months of life. The research examines cost variations by age, disease group, funding scheme, and service type, revealing substantial inpatient spending and high expenditure concentration among specific clinical trajectories. It also evaluates palliative care utilization and models key cost drivers. Findings aim to guide policies that improve quality of care, reduce low-value interventions, and strengthen palliative care planning to ensure sustainable and equitable end-of-life health financing in Thailand.
